Biometrics – research project at the University of Applied Sciences Brandenburg
StepOver is the official industrial cooperation partner of the OptiBioHash research project
A new three year research project started on June 1st 2009 under coordination of the University of Applied Sciences Brandenburg (Germany). The project leader of the research group is Prof. Dr. Claus Vielhauer.
Besides the fingerprint, the most well-known biometric feature, a large number of other alternative procedures exist for the computer supported authentication of persons. These include e.g. voices, signatures, iris (eyes) or face recognition, in which the personal signature stands out as the aspect of the active manifestation of intent, being an indispensable instrument in today’s written contracts.
Due to the development of modern signature pads, the basic idea of the personal signature is increasingly transferred to the digital world. Signature pads are devices that enable the acquisition and digitalisation of handwriting in figurative and dynamic representation. E.g. the position, velocity and pressure of a pen can be registered several hundred times per second and passed on to a computer. The newest generation signature pads are also equipped with integrated software technology, which might enable the future processing of biometric algorithms directly executed on the signature pad instead of on connected external computer systems.
The advantage of joining biometric algorithms on signature pads lies in an improved protection of the reference data, which is subject to data protection regulations in case of signatures. Moreover, these systems could offer low-cost integrated signature solutions, since no additional software components are required. However, some problems should be overcome, which at the same time constitute the essential research topics of this project. These problems include the non- or wrong recognition of persons, the hacking capacity of the system by potential attackers and the limited computing power of the processes integrated on the signature pads.
These problems are treated within the next 3 years in the research project with the abbreviation “OptiBioHashEmbedded”. The cooperation partners of the University of Applied Sciences Brandenburg are the Otto-von-Guericke University of Magdeburg and StepOver GmbH from Stuttgart, both from Germany. The project leader Prof. Dr. Claus Vielhauer and both scientific collaborators Tobias Scheidat and Karl Kümmel work at the University of Applied Sciences Brandenburg and are actively involved in the project. This team receives assistance by Prof. Dr. Jana Dittmann, who works at OvGU Magdeburg. StepOver GmbH supports the project team with the hardware integration (embedded system) of the detection algorithms. Further information on this research project is available on
