SimpleSigner enables the simple, command line controlled integration of the secure handwritten e-signatures in your application.

The SimpleSigner can be integrated into any customer application as a signature acquisition window without any programming required. It is controlled via start parameters.

In the free basic version, signatures can be saved as bitmap and jpeg. With a premium update, it is also possible to sign PDF and TIFF documents using the SimpleSigner command lines.

The basic function of the StepOver SimpleSigner

The basic free version of SimpleSigner allows the user to capture signatures, which can then be saved as Bitmap or JPG files. For this purpose, the SimpleSigner must be accessed via command line parameters. This way, the SimpleSigner can be integrated into each customer’s individual application as a signature acquisition window without any additional programming required.

SimpleSigner offers multiple optional start parameters, e.g. to insert text in StepOver signature pad screens, for the automatic cutting of the recorded signature to optimise the space occupied by the stored image, etc.


Extension possibilities for the SimpleSigner

An extension is available for purchase that allows the SimpleSigner to control the StepOver Signature API and to sign TIFF and PDF documents using command line controls. This way, the signature functionality of the StepOver products can also be integrated into a customer application without additional programming required. The SimpleSigner only pops up as a signature acquisition window. From version 5.x, the SimpleSigner can also encode PDF and TIFF documents with asymmetric encryption (up to 4096 bit RSA), which makes it highly suitable for the setup of systems with advanced e-signature.

For the validation of an electronically signed document, there are six key aspects:

• The quality of the acquired signature (the signer’s identification mark).
• The secure transmission of the signature and its secure storage in the document (the signature can never be copied or used in any other way).
• The inseparable combination of the identification mark (the signature) with the content of the document, the way it was at the moment of signing (i.e. later document modifications should render the signature invalid).
• The self-protection (in the legal sense) of the company implementing this system should be guaranteed, i.e. the system of the company and/or its employees should not be able to decipher the biometric data of the signature or extract it from the document to insert it into another. Otherwise, it cannot be proved that the signer really signed this document on the basis of this evidence (analogous to paper).
• The use of revision-safe document formats such as PDF(a) or TIFF in order to secure that the electronic document can be opened and read for many years.
• A technology- and manufacturer-independent verifiability of the identification mark (i.e. the signature). This is necessary on the one hand to be able to present comprehensible and credible evidence in court and on the other hand to have the security that the documents signed electronically today can also be used in the far future.

To fulfil these requirements, you need both secure software and a corresponding secure, high-quality signature pad.

• The StepOver pad driver for communication with the signature pads from the StepOver product family.
• Optionally, Tablet PCs are supported in the SimpleSigner Tablet PC edition, enabling direct on-screen signing.
• Optionally, graphics tablets and pen pads by other manufacturers are also supported in the SimpleSigner with Wintab/Tablet PC extension.

In the "Basic" variants (SimpleSigner Basic etc.) the StepOver SimpleSigner can only save image (JPG and bitmaps) versions of the signature.
In the "Asym" variants (SimpleSigner Asym etc.) TIFF and PDF documents are supported for the signing process, both with symmetric and asymmetric encryption. Therefore, with the "Asym" variants, systems for "simple" and "advanced" e-signatures can be setup.

The products with "Standard" ending (e.g. SimpleSigner Asym Standard) only support signature pads of StepOver GmbH as acquisition devices. Products with "Tablet PC" ending also support Tablet PCs, whereas "Wintab/Tablet-PC" products  support StepOver pads, Tablet PCs and pen pads of other manufacturers through a Wintab driver of the manufacturing company.
